Wigan Borough has weathered the storm and now it could be time for gardeners everywhere to turn their thoughts towards Spring.
And as the days lengthen and the Earth tilts gently on its axis towards the sun, things may be beginning to stir in the garden.
If you are thinking about all things green and pleasant then make sure the first thing you think is…bins.
From Monday February 15 Wigan Council will be bringing it’s popular green bin collection out of hibernation hopefully ready for a bumper crop of grass cuttings and garden waste this year.
Wigan Council’s Cabinet Champion for the Environment, Cllr David Molyneux, says: “Moving towards March we are about to see a time of growth in the garden. Plants and flowers ‘spring forth’ which historically gives the season its name.
“We know there are many passionate gardeners in our borough eager to get out in the fresh air and get cracking.
“It’s really important that we recycle our green waste because if it goes to landfill, not only is it costly but it rots and produces methane which adds to global warming.
“The green waste you put in your bin for collection can be turned into valuable soil enhancer which can in turn be used to help local crops grows."
Cllr Molyneux adds: “We want people to take pride in their communities and as we start our preparations for what we hope will be another successful Borough in Bloom year and the beginning of the composting season, it’s never too early to start thinking about what we do with our waste. For home composters food scraps makes great compost for your garden.”
