Wigan Council has announced service updates over the Easter holiday weekend.
Waste management staff say that the borough’s household waste recycling centres will be open and working to their Bank Holiday timetable (this means a 9pm close for Chanters in Atherton and Slag Lane in Leigh, but 6pm at Kirkless in Higher Ince).
All Friday waste collections will be one day later. Easter Monday collections will be as normal. Full details are on the calendars issued to residents.
The new pool in the Wigan Life Centre will be open throughout the holiday period – check the website for details. The library will be open on Saturday as usual but not on Friday, Sunday or Monday. The one stop shop service in the Life Centre will be open on Saturday from 10am-4pm but closed on Sunday and the Bank Holidays.
The town centre management team are reminding shoppers about parking in town. Bank Holidays as well as Sundays offer free parking on the surface car parks around the town and pay and display 8am-6pm at other times. Bengal Street in Leigh will be closed on the Bank Holidays but open 7am-6.30pm on Saturday 7th April.
Wigan Market will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Leigh Market is open on Good Friday (10 till 4) and closed on Easter Monday.
The Galleries and Grand Arcade shopping centres will be closed on Easter Sunday, but will operate normal hours on Good Friday and on Saturday. Both will be open on Easter Monday from 11am-5pm.
In the Galleries, there’s an Easter display with an egg appeal for children in the Rainbow Ward at the Royal Albert Edward Hospital. The Grand Arcade is marking its fifth birthday with children’s favourite Fifi and the Flowertots on Saturday, plus free craft workshops, chocolates and face painting.
Wigan and Leigh Housing’s contact centre is closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday but will be open as usual on Saturday from 8am - 12.30pm. An emergency service is provided outside of normal hours on the same number: 01942 70 50 40. Both of Housing’s Property Shops in Leigh and Wigan will be closed on Good Friday, Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.
The council’s website wigan.gov.uk has 24 hour access to a wide range of services and forms to report issues on the highway, pay bills online, apply for some licences and benefits, as well as access a wealth of information about public services in the borough. Contact centre advice on 01942 404364 will be available on Saturday from 8am - 12.30pm.
