Everyone for tennis?

Tuesday 1st July 2008 (ref: 192/2008)

The covers are off…

The courts are ready…

The barley water’s on ice…

In fact everything is set for the grand finale of the tennis event of the season.

But this isn’t SW19, it’s WN7 and for one day only the magic and Wimbledon is heading north to Leigh.

The sights, sounds, aromas and flavours and the world’s greatest tennis tournament will be coming to Bedford High School on Friday July 4 and it’s all about keeping the kids healthy.

There will be round after round of knockabout action on three stages – outdoors on the Astroturf, inside in the sports hall and in the virtual world of the Nintendo Wii’s tennis game.

As well as the tennis action there will be stalls and units selling a variety of good as part of the school’s business enterprise project. With the entire school of roughly 800 pupils taking part there promises to be something for everyone.

But if tennis aint your thing then there’s one thing something equally special to celebrate about Wimbledon fortnight – the food!

Wigan Council’s cutting-edge school meals service Metrofresh will be on-hand at Bedford throughout the day and the team will be serving up some real match-winners.

Headteacher Stephen Preston says:

“This should be a fantastic day on a number of levels, not least of which is to have fun!! The pupils and staff of the school have worked tremendously hard all year and, weather permitting, this is a small reward.

Metrofresh strategic manager Debbie Clarke adds:

“The aim of the whole event is to promote the health and well-being of the pupils by looking at the importance being active and what the children eat.

“We will be serving up a special menu both for pupils and our VIP guests that is fun, healthy and delicious.”

The menu for the centre court event includes:

  • Sandwiches and wraps
  • Fruit tarts
  • Strawberry scones
  • Irish tea cakes
  • Carrot cake
  • Fresh fruit kebabs

There will also be fair trade sweets and an ever-so-Wimbledon special Bedford Cocktai

“It’s going to be a great event and one that we hope that everyone involved will enjoy and get a lot out of,” says Debbie. “It should be just like the real thing except rain definitely won’t stop play!”
