Leigh Library, Local Studies and the Turnpike Gallery have joined forces to create a ‘Super Saturday’ on 28 April at the Turnpike Centre in Leigh.

Visitors can drop-in any time between 11am and 2.30pm and enjoy a range of events and activities for all the family, including Wii games, a Victorian toys handling session and an art workshop as part of the Tunrpike’s new exhibition ‘Art + Play’.

Also on offer is a Story Book Sport session from 11am to 11.45am (please book at the Library counter). Admission to all events is free.

The Turnpike’s new exhibition, Art + Play has been designed with young visitors in mind and there’s no need to worry about your children touching the artwork - that’s exactly what the Turnpike want them to do! The Turnpike Gallery will be filled with colours, sounds and textures for your children to explore and enjoy.

Eight artists have been commissioned to make work for this special exhibition. Before producing the work, each artist spent five days in a pre-school setting to develop a greater understanding of how children think, play, and create. The final ideas for the work have all been ‘road tested’ by children from the early years settings.

Martyn Lucas, Visual Arts Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said: “The Turnpike Gallery aims to share inspiring exhibitions by contemporary artists for a diverse range of local people.

“Young children often come to the gallery with older brothers or sisters as part of a family visit and take part in activities. This exhibition takes a big step further in engaging very young children with interactive art works and will be quite unlike any other we’ve had. Grown-ups, of course, are also welcome!”

The exhibiting artists are: Linda Arkley, Lucy Fergus, Alex Hallowes and Pete Rogers, Kate Scully, Jason Taylor, and Kathryn and Rachel Welford.

Art + Play is a 20-21 Visual Arts Centre touring exhibition supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Art + Play opens at the Turnpike Gallery on Saturday 28 April and continues until Saturday 16 June.
