A day for everyone – Wigan celebrates mental health

Monday 29th September 2008 (ref: 303/2008)

One in four of people will experience mental health problems at some stage in their lives.

It’s a sobering statistic about an area that affects so many but remains shrouded in misinformation, myths, stigma and taboo.

From anxiety and depression through to enduring and life-limiting conditions mental health issues affect many people in many different ways. And we could all do with finding out a little bit more and help separate fact from fiction.

Any one who has experienced mental health problems, either first hand or through the experiences of a loved one, will know that there are many questions to be answered and much to learn:

  • What is happening?
  • Why?
  • Who can I talk to?
  • Where can I get help?

On Friday October 10, mental health professionals, carers, volunteers and those who have experienced mental health problems from all over our borough will attempt to answer some of these questions as part of Wigan’s celebration of World Mental Health Day.

The Wigan Dimensions Partnership will be taking over Robin Park Sports Arena between noon and 4pm with a mixture of stalls, information stands, activities and events all aimed as raising awareness about mental health issues.

The Wigan Council-backed event is aimed at anyone and everyone who wants more information on what’s on offer in our borough for people with mental health problems and their families and carers.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Champion for Healthier Communities and Older People, Cllr Keith Cunliffe says:

“Traditionally mental health issues are something we as a society do not talk about.

“This can only serve to exacerbate the problem and add to the uncertainty and distress that people experiencing mental health problems feel.

“Often talking about the issue and discovering that you are not alone can be the first step to helping resolve any problems.”

World Mental Health Day began life in 1992 and is supported by the World Federation for Mental Health. The theme for this year’s global event is 'mental health in a changing world' and the effect of culture and diversity.

The Wigan event will see displays about information and support, information on therapies and even the chance to try a few out along with practical demonstrations and information about training.

There will also be a fun Wigan vs Blackpool football match along with practical demonstrations and information about training.

Cllr Cunliffe adds:

“We hope that Wigan’s World Mental Health Day will not only be helpful, informative and reassuring but will be inviting, friendly and fun.“It really is a day for everyone and I would urge everyone who is interested to come along and find out more.
