Wigan has welcomed its latest ambassador from French twin town Angers.
22 year old Hélène Joulain arrived in town this week on a mission to strengthen cross-channel links dating back to the late 1980s.
A graduate in Modern Languages from Angers’ Université Catholique de l’Ouest, Hélène speaks German and Russian, as well as English. She has previously worked as a translator in the mediaeval Le Plessis Bourré castle near Angers and in historic Leipzig, Saxony.
Previous travels have also taken her to the Netherlands, Russia and Finland, but this is Hélène’s first visit to England. She says:
“Until this week, the only thing I knew about Wigan was what I’d read on information leaflets in Angers – and that the football team used to have a French player! My first impression is of a nice town, friendly people, quite sunny and a little bit rainy.
”My ambition is to become a translator, so this is an exceptional opportunity to develop new professional skills and at the same time discover a new country and way of life.”
Hélène’s hobbies include travel and music, especially pop, rock and classical, and she also plays the flute.
