The Pride of Leigh – awards for everyday heroes

Monday 27th October 2008 (ref: 336/08)

Every community has them… the selfless, caring individuals who work tireless to improve the lives of others.

They don’t do it for praise, they don’t do it for glory, they do it because they care.

Now community leaders in Leigh think it’s time that the unsung heroes stepped out of the shadows and took a well-deserved slice of the limelight for a change.

For the second year running, Leigh Township Forum is running a very special awards event that seeks to honour those local people, businesses and organisations who have given something back to the community.

And they want the people of Leigh to come forward with suggestions for worthy winners.

The Forum is looking for nominations in seven categories:

  • Community Endeavour (unpaid work in the Leigh area)
  • Business
  • Young Person (18 years and under)
  • Group Award
  • Township Support (someone who is actively involved with the Leigh Township Forum)
  • Good Neighbour
  • Good Citizen (someone with a track record of dedicated service to the local community over a number of years)

Pam Stewart, who is co-chair of the township forum, explains:

“Leigh is brimming with unsung heroes who make the town a wonderful place to be. The awards will help to recognise some of these special people.”

While fellow co-chair Cllr Charles Rigby adds:

“The awards will be the people of Leigh’s awards – they will be the ones nominating local people and local businesses. This is a terrific opportunity to put someone forward for an award to recognise what they have done for the town.”

Nomination forms and more details are available from Leigh Town Hall, library, participating shops and businesses, or online through the Leigh Township pages. Everyone who is nominated will get a ‘thank you’ certificate.

The closing date has been extended to Wednesday 5th November and finalists will be invited to the awards ceremony on Thursday November 20, which will form part of the Leigh Christmas Lights switch on. The presentations will be made on the stage in front of the town hall just before the switch on.

Chair of Leigh Town Centre Management Group Cllr Anne Turnock says:

“This is all about recognising people and businesses whose devotion makes Leigh a great place to live, work and shop. The awards were well-supported last year and we’re really excited about doing it again this year. The only thing we need now is the people of Leigh to nominate their heroes. Remember you’ve only got until 5th November, so it’s over to you!”
