A former play area in Atherton that had to be dismantled years ago has been given a new lease of life.

It’s over ten years since the site, on a playing field at Douglas Street, last had any equipment on it.

But after talking to local residents, Atherton’s township forum has decided this would be the best place for a state-of-the-art play area.

The £75,000 scheme, paid for by contributions from housing developers, was officially ‘launched’ on Saturday (25 October).

Councillor Susan Loudon, Joint Chair of Atherton Township Forum said:

“We reviewed play provision across the township and this site was identified as a gap in an area where we knew there were many young families.

“We consulted local residents who live within easy walking distance of the site and an overwhelming majority were in favour of having a play area and felt that this was the best place to put it.

Community Joint Chair Christine Ridyard added:

“Local parents with young children are clearly delighted with the site and many are making good use of it already.”

The design includes a fenced play area with safety surfacing beneath modern new equipment. Footpaths have been laid out and new trees will be planted shortly.
