Sparrows to the rescue

Monday 30th October 2006 (ref: 363/2006)

The people of Lowton are being urged to turn out in force next Monday evening (6th November) to help shape the future of their local community centre.

The future of Lowton Youth and Community Centre has been hanging in the balance since the centre began to lose volunteers, including its licence-holder. Wigan Council is allowing groups to use the centre for the time being, but a new management group must be formed to take on the lease.

Now, the people behind the survival plan need public support so they can form a charitable limited company to secure the future of the Newton Road facility.

Youth club volunteer worker Mary Waterworth explains:

“The centre has been run by a group of volunteers for the benefit of the community for many years, but in recent months many of the people involved have moved on. If we can form a charitable limited company to take on the lease of the centre, we can run it for the benefit of the whole community.”

Local Councillor Ian Franzen adds:

“The community centre is part of the fabric of Lowton, so we need as many people as possible to attend this meeting and give it - and the youth of Lowton - a positive future.”

The meeting starts at six o’clock at Lowton Youth and Community Centre.
