When it comes to household waste, size really does matter.
And when it comes to wheelie bins, well small is beautiful.
Wigan Council has responded to requests from householders across the borough to give them a new smaller version of the trusted wheelie bin.
So now they come in ‘small’ and ‘large’.
Cllr David Molyneux, cabinet environment champion, explains: “Earlier this year, trial collections of cans, plastic and glass bottles began in some parts of the borough. As part of the trial we asked residents what they thought of the size of their bins. Most people were happy with the standard bins, but some wanted a smaller sized one to help them manage their waste.”
The normal sized bins are 110cm in height, 75cm wide and 62cm across and can hold 240 litres of rubbish or recycling. The smaller option holds half as much, and is slightly shorter at 97cm height, and 48 cm wide and 55cm across.
Cllr Molyneux adds: “We’ve listened to the residents and can now offer these bins as a swap if you feel you don’t need the bigger kind.”
Residents can ask for the 120 litre wheelie bins in exchange for their existing black bin, or for those properties receiving collections of green and brown bins, there’s a smaller option for each available.
Residents who want to ask about replacing their wheelie bin with a smaller one can call the Environmental Services Helpline on 01942 404364. Or they can make a visit onlineand go to the ‘refuse collection online fault’ form.
The council collects waste from 130,000 domestic properties, and also offers collections of garden waste, paper, bottles, plastics and cans from many homes. These new services are being rolled out to more and more properties over the next couple of years.
