Ashton and Golborne town centres are dreaming of a greener Christmas, following a decision to use eco friendly artificial Christmas trees rather than the usual real ones.
The trees are slightly smaller than in previous years, but will still stand at a whopping 6.7m tall. They come complete with a blanket of LED lights, which make for a really eye catching display.
In a statement, the Ashton ward councillors Nigel Ash, Walter Carney and Paul Tushingham say:
“In previous years, we have had a real Christmas tree in Ashton Town Centre. However, we wanted to be more environmentally friendly going forward and decided to go for an artificial tree instead. The tree looks just as good, if not better than the real trees we have had in the past, but it is obviously better for the environment.”
Not only are the new trees more eco friendly, they are also better on the purse strings too. The trees have been bought outright by the towns’ local councillors from their Brighter Borough Funds.
In a separate statement Golborne and Lowton West Ward councillors Ged Bretherton, Mark Klieve and Yvonne Klieve say:
“Having an artificial tree, which we can use year on year, means that we have additional money in our Brighter Borough Fund to spend on more projects throughout the year. Together with the environmental benefits of an artificial tree, we feel that this decision will also benefit our constituents in the long term too.”
