Spreading the word about education; that’s one of the key tasks of Wigan Council’s panel for Children and Young People.
And so, to ensure the members of the influential council team are really in touch with school pupils, they have taken their meetings right into school.
Gathering away from Wigan town hall for the very first time, the panel went to Byrchall High School in Ashton. Politicians, representatives from the community, clergy and officials discussed a packed agenda in the setting of the popular secondary school’s large library.
“It’s important we keep fresh and aware of children and young people’s issues,” says Chair Cllr Susan Loudon. “And this is one way to demonstrate that. We will be back in the town hall next time, and then we will come together in Leigh for the meeting after that.”
But before the serious discussion began, panel members were treated to a splendid salmon and canapé buffet from members of the school’s cookery club.
Four Year Ten pupils, and their teachers, laid on a stunning cold platter for the officials, and were warmly thanked by Cllr Loudon for their excellent hospitality.
Pupil Luke Pryce, 14, is an eager chef-in-training. He said:
“We have already catered for open days and other events, but to serve at an important council meeting is very special. We’re proud Byrchall was chosen to host the event. And it’s great for our CVs as well because we all want to become professionals working in this area.”
The Children and Young People’s Panel is one of several committees chaired by elected members. They scrutinise and discuss legislation and the business of the council, and contain representatives from across the political spectrum, as well as co-opted members from many relevant disciplines and walks of life.
