A Wigan youth who was caught red-handed vandalising the town centre Market Place returned to the scene of the ‘grime’ yesterday (Thursday 29th November).
17-year old David Biggins was spotted by council CCTV operators recently scrawling graffiti in the popular town centre spot. They used the new ‘Shopwatch’ radio system to alert town centre PCSOs Michelle Ashurst and Keiran Davies, whose prompt response left David no option but to own up.
David was hit with an £80 fixed penalty and was also given the option of removing the graffiti as part of his punishment. Yesterday he was back in the Market Place to do just that.
Councillor Keith Cunliffe, Cabinet Champion for Neighbourhoods says:
“Graffiti in public places may appear to be a ‘victimless’ crime, but it makes places look unattractive and unloved – and the council taxpayer foots the bill for the clean-up.”
David admitted:
“I've learnt my lesson in a very public way, I’m sorry and I won’t do it again!”
