Don’t Be Alarmed!

Wednesday 22nd November 2006 (ref: 400/2006)

Alarm bells are ringing at Wigan Council’s Trading Standards department after a number of complaints about the latest batch of doorstep sellers.

The council’s consumer watchdogs are now urging everyone to be on their guard against individuals selling door alarms.

So far residents in Ashton, Leigh and Scholes have complained about people going from door-to-door claiming to be from the council and offering to fit the security devices.

In one case, after fitting the alarm, the man demanded £20. Another resident was charged £10 for the same job but when she said she didn’t have that much he asked her how much she did have…and took that!

Chief Trading Standards Officer Alan Blundell says:

“These people are not in any way connected with the council and we have no dealings with them. We have since been informed that the alarms they are selling for £10 or £20 are available to buy for as little as £1.

“We would advise residents not do business with people who cold call. If you are not expecting anyone and get a knock on your door, put the chain on before you answer. Always ask to see the seller’s identification and check it with the company concerned. Don’t call the number on the card they give you, but look in the telephone book for a number.”

The rule from the Trading Standards team is: If in doubt keep them out.

“Remember it is your home,” says Alan. “You are not being rude by asking them to leave or by refusing to buy from them.”
