WIGAN and Leigh residents are being encouraged to lend a hand as part of National Volunteers Week.
Organisations from across the borough are uniting in June for a day dedicated to recognising the borough’s unsung heroes and promoting how you can make a difference to other people’s lives.
Wigan and Leigh Volunteers Day takes place on Friday 5th June at Mesnes Park in Wigan.
As well as stands and information from partner organisations, there is a programme of free, fun events taking place between 11am and 2.30pm.
Events range from health walks and ‘salsacise’ to planting baskets and children’s activities.
Partners attending the event include Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Active Living Team (who provide programmes to support people in becoming more physically active to improve their health and quality of life), Wigan Council, V Involved, the Sunflower Project and St John Ambulance.
Debbie McCann, WLCT’s Active Living officer, said:
“Volunteers are a big part of the work that we do and this event aims to recognise and reward volunteers across the borough. It’s also an opportunity to recruit the volunteers of the future.
“It is the 25th anniversary of the national Volunteers Week, so it seems an ideal time to introduce a local celebration.
“You don’t have to be able to give all of your free time to become a volunteer – often one or two hours a week can make a real difference to people’s lives.
“The organisations at this event will have information on how you can get involved.”
Wigan and Leigh Volunteers Day takes place on Friday 5th June, 11.00am – 2.30pm at Mesnes Park in Wigan.
