Another Hindley town centre eyesore has been transformed as part of a council heritage initiative.
The previously derelict units, 21-23 Market Street, have been restored to useful life as an attractive shop unit with 2 residential apartments above.
The Hindley town centre townscape heritage initiative has delivered this latest improvement to a very visible frontage on the busy junction at the top of Market Street. Finance for the project came from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Martin Kimber, Wigan Council’s executive director of environmental services, said:
”This is another important stage in the regeneration of one of our borough’s key town centres. There has been much work done already to develop buildings, public spaces and a safe street environment in Hindley. This investment shows the commitment of the council and the local businesses as Hindley town centre continues its renaissance.”
The successful redevelopment of 21-23 Market Street was seen as essential to the heritage initiative. It is the second successful grant assisted scheme to be implemented in the town centre, after 28 Market Street received similar help last year.
Previous council works included the high quality York stone paving scheme carried out on Market Street, new street lighting and pedestrian safety measures. Refurbishment of the former Topspot snooker club is expected to start later in the year, whilst discussions are underway about a further property on Market Street.
