A Lowton man has been ordered to pay £200 for dumping bags of household waste in Atherton.
Ali Corus, 32 of Bodden Street, faced magistrates in Wigan on Thursday (May 15) and admitted dumping controlled waste in Atherton in December 2006. He was fined £100 and ordered to pay a contribution of £100 towards costs.
The court heard that Corus was caught on CCTV dumping bags outside Chanters Waste Recycling Centre during an operation run by the Council’s Environmental Crime team to catch illegal tippers.
Although admitting the offence, Corus claimed he had limited ability to read English and had not understood warning signs installed to deter illegal tippers. The court heard Corus went to another site later the same day and attempted to dump further waste illegally. He was stopped by a security guard and then realised his earlier error.
Welcoming the prosecution, Wigan Council’s Safer Neighbourhoods Manager Michell Woodburn said:
“Although the level of fine is relatively low in this case, it does send out a tough message that we will take action against anyone caught fly tipping in Wigan and that offenders can end up with a criminal record. We would like to once again thank the community for helping us to maintain a cleaner, safer greener borough and reassure the community that we will not allow environmental criminals to blight our borough.”
