There’s been a serious amount of ‘investment in the future’ going on at Hesketh Fletcher High.
Pupils at the Atherton secondary school are set to benefit from several hundred pounds from their local community and from their local councillors’ funds which will give them a boost in sport and music.
In a special assembly this week, pupils heard about role models from their teachers. And several pillars of the community were present to reward them, including the joint chair of the township forum and their local councillors.
Hesketh Fletcher will be representing the UK in Munich for a week later this year. New netball and football kits have been supported by a donation from the local community, adding to the money the children raised themselves for travel expenses.
Then the local ward members donated £1000 for musical instruments to support budding musicians at the school with the cost of owning their own instrument.
Not forgetting the plaudits from Prince Charles. After appearing on stage at Stratford, two of the pupils so impressed the heir to the throne that he asked if they had ever been to the ballet. When they said they had not, Prince Charles said he would send them some tickets. The kids were thrilled, but needed to organise a coach. Again, the children have been supported by councillors’ Brighter Borough funding.
Cllr Susan Loudon, who is the council’s champion for education, told pupils and staff:
“I am very proud of this school and, together with colleagues on the township forum and fellow ward members, we are thrilled to be helping you to progress. We’re listening.”
Chris Drake, school PE lead, thanked the councillors and forum for their support for new kit for his team and head teacher Janice Rowlands added:
“The school plays an important part in the local community and we’re delighted to be recognised and supported for this work.”
The visit concluded with Councillor Loudon and her colleagues Cllrs Turnock and Aldred, plus Pam Stewart, the joint chair of the township forum, chatting with many of the children and their teachers.
