Older people in Atherton are being invited to get fitter and friendlier.
A new project, packed full of activities, events and information, is coming to the Atherton and Hag Fold area and all over 55s are invited to get involved.
Champion for older people, Cllr Keith Cunliffe, says:
“I want to ensure people don’t miss out on the latest advice and news. I am delighted to announce the start of this project which will look to address that, specifically with the needs of the over 55s in mind in a friendly and helpful way.”
The Health and Wellbeing Pilot Project, led by Wigan and Leigh Housing, and supported by the Leisure and Culture Trust and Active Living Team, has been created with the needs of the older community in mind. It starts a major trial in the Atherton and Hag Fold area this spring, with the first sessions completely free.
As well as social activities, local advice agencies will be on hand to give details of the benefits people are entitled to. Also on offer will be advice on staying safe and secure at home and out and about. There’s a chance to see how to get involved and make a difference in the community, or for those seeking a more gentle pastime, there are meetings with those who just want to reminisce and chat about the old days.
Health and wellbeing co-ordinator Andrea Pugh will be leading on ensuring people get the best advice from the right places. She is based in the community itself. She says:
“There’s a lot happening in Atherton and Hag Fold to increase the independence of older people, so please get involved. I am keen to hear from people – tenants, homeowners, anyone – if you want to know what’s happening or how to access services.”
Andrea’s job is to link up agencies and organisations that work in the community. If someone is interested in the service, a referral is made. This can be by the person themselves or by anybody else on their behalf, such as a district nurse, relative, social worker, someone from a church or a community health development workers. The project is funded by the council’s ‘Supporting People Programme’.
Andrea adds:
