Arts Award
Jump to it!: Talented young Wiganers are over the moon with the new Arts Award.

A new scheme is to be launched in Wigan to sustain our rich artistic heritage.

The Arts Award will nurture young actors, musicians, writers, broadcasters, artists, photographers and dancers hoping to follow the footsteps of the likes of Sir Ian McKellen, The Verve, Stuart Maconie and Kym Marsh.

Young people aged between 11 and 25 can gain bronze, silver and gold qualifications that recognise their development as artists and art leaders.

The Arts Award will be overseen locally by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and it will be run in local youth clubs, theatres and other places where young people aged 11 to 25 are taking part in the arts.

Vicky Fletcher, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Arts Development Officer, says:

“The Arts Award is open to young people across the country. It will uncover young talent and help young artists realise their full potential by developing their creativity and leadership skills.

“The Arts Award is about personal challenge and not competition against others. Young people develop their own plan according to their interests and personal circumstances.”

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust is now recruiting people who work with young people to deliver the scheme locally.

Anyone who has been working with young people full-time for two years, or three years part-time, can become an Arts Award advisor by taking a one day training course at Robin Park Arena in Wigan on Tuesday June 10th.

Several well known artists including Graham Norton, Benjamin Zephaniah and Richard E Grant are supporting the Arts Award scheme.

Graham Norton said: "Whatever your artistic interests or talents, it's really important that you make the most of any opportunity that gives you the chance to learn, develop and expand your creativity. That's why I'm really pleased to support the young people's Arts Award for all the encouragement and recognition it gives to those involved."
