Lesson for life – primary pupils prepare for future

Today primary school, tomorrow the world!

That’s the message from Wigan’s Education Business Partnership (EBP) as it prepares to take its show on the road.

On Tuesday July 1 the EBP team will be heading from St Mary’s Primary School in Ince, for a full day of activities aimed at preparing pupils for the big wide world.

From food to finances the team will be taking their young charges through their paces with a series of fun activity sessions.

Education Business Link Co-ordinator Vicky Hitchen explains: “The project is all about getting the children to think about some of the skills they will need to prepare them for their adult life. We believe it’s never too early to start to think about these things but we will be introducing the concepts in a fun and entertaining way.”

On the menu at the day-long session is:

  • The Sandwich Company Enterprise Challenge – The children are introduced to the idea of enterprise by being given the task of setting up their own healthy butty business.
  • The Paper Bag Trading Game – The children will be shown how to make paper bags, similar to those made by children in India. They will then work in teams to make the bags and be paid 1p for every 10.
  • Skills Circus – Problem solving, managing a budget, innovation, leadership and more. The children will be given the chance to try them all.
  • Ready for the Real World – The children will be given an enterprise task to test their financial skills, decision-making and team-building.

Vicky says:

“There are many different qualities and skills we think the children will begin to think about as part of these sessions from co-operation and team building, through to creativity and independence. It will also cover things such as different cultures as well as encouraging activities for the whole family.”
