Local residents are being asked for their views on how to give Wigan borough a sustainable future.
Sustainability is the business buzzword of the moment, but it’s also about making sure the borough is built to last. Council planners are currently looking at the social, environmental and economic challenges ahead – and they want local residents to do the same.
People who care about where they live can get involved in two ways:
- By visiting the council's website and commenting on the ‘sustainability appraisal’;
- By joining a new panel being formed to make sure council policies really do address matters of local and global concern.
Cllr David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s Cabinet Champion for the Environment, says:
“We owe it to future generations to make sure that what we do today doesn’t compromise their ability to meet their own needs, so our planners have been busy looking at major topics such as population, housing and the natural environment, and the key influences in their long-term sustainability.
“But this isn’t just about the council – it’s about the thousands of people around the borough who care about where they live and what the future might hold. Anybody who counts themselves among that group can visit us online or become actively involved with the panel.”
Wigan Council is looking for up to six people with the necessary skills, enthusiasm and commitment to work with the council on sustainability issues. Two, 2-hour sessions will be held in late August, with further sessions to be held during the winter.
Anybody interested can find out more by contacting Lynn Kay, Partnership Support Officer, on 01942 776156 or emailing lynn.kay@wigan.gov.uk
Training and development, and attendance fees will be provided, and there will be opportunities for further involvement.
