A stroll down by the River Douglas is now an even more pleasant affair thanks to the tidy actions of a local cub scout group.

The St Mary’s and St John’s Cub Scouts recently joined forces with the Friends of Douglas Valley and the council’s green team for a Big Tidy Up along the riverbank.

Starting at the Central Park Way bridge the eager beavers toiled for two hours picking up litter as part of the group’s work towards its Global Conservation Badge.

The cubs asked the council’s Environmental Education Team for help and it was happy to supply gloves, litter-pickers and bags.

Cub Scout Leader Zoe Halliwell says:

“It’s important for all of us to remember that dropping one sweet wrapper may not seem a big deal, but if we all did it, that’s an awful lot of litter to tidy up. A small change in attitude can make a big difference, I’m proud of all my cubs and their families for helping to make a big difference.”

The Environmental Education Team will be following up the litter-pick with a visit to the group that will further help them get their conservation badge.

Ellen Belshaw from the Environmental Education Team, says:

“I am pleased that the young people are showing an interest in environmental issues and want to take action. It just goes to show that no matter what you age you can help to improve the environment. We are keen to help any other groups or individuals carry out their own clean-ups or other environmental improvements, so please give us a call.”
