WIGAN children’s library is on the move!

The Wiend Children’s Library will temporarily switch to the Galleries shopping centre before it returns to its original setting as part of the new £63m Joint Service Centre set to transform the heart of Wigan town centre.

Facilities will jump the short distance from Millgate into retail’s front-line next to Argos in the Galleries.

So now parents and their children can return books without breaking sweat looking for bargains.

On Wednesday February 11 the new location will be officially opened by Cabinet member for Wigan’s Children and Young People’s Service Cllr Sue Loudon and Cabinet member for Culture Cllr Brian Baldwin.

Andrew Pickup, Children’s Library Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said:

“We have designed an exciting new programme and are looking to launch many activities and services for teenagers, young children and their families throughout the next year.

“This is a temporary move and in two years time we’ll have brand new purpose built library.”

The Wiend will close this Friday for one week as services are transferred across to the Galleries.

It will re-open in its new location on Monday 9th February.

A new story time session will start on 2nd April between 10am and 11am and will run every Thursday after that.

Regular events such as the weekly Baby Club, Under 5s storytimes and Saturday craft activities will continue to be run at the new site along with additional activities during the school holidays.

The new library is scheduled to be completed by 2011 and is part of the multi-million pound project – officially known as the Joint Service Centre (JSC) – which will create a state of the art leisure, health and information complex including a new one stop shop for all public services.
