Wind of change for Leigh market

The sensation of standing in a wind tunnel on Leigh outside market could soon be a thing of the past.

Council chiefs have given the green light to a major scheme aimed at tackling the problems first reported by traders and shoppers after the market relocated to Albion Street in 2002.

The council asked construction experts the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to recommend a solution to the problem, and they concluded that extending the canopy over the market on both sides was the best way to counter the effect of the wind.

A pilot scheme was then carried out in 2005 which confirmed that this would have the desired effect.

Work will now start at the end of the month and take 13 weeks to complete. It will be done in two phases and will involve boarding off part of Albion Street to allow pedestrians safe passage.

However trading at both the indoor and outdoor markets will be unaffected while the work is carried out.

Markets manager Philip Edge said: “This will hopefully create a better environment for the outdoor market traders and for members of the public, with more effective protection against the weather.

“It’s also a gateway into Spinning Gate and extending the canopy will be good for the appearance of this part of town.”

The council has agreed to fund the scheme using £100,000 from the proceeds of the sale of the wholesale market at Marus Bridge, so it is not costing council tax payers a penny.
