Motorists and road users in Wigan are set to benefit from a £13m investment from taxpayers.
Government funding coming to the north west’s main roads includes a stretch of the A580 East Lancs Road at Lowton.
The transport minister, Paul Clark, announced the funding which enables the council to make important improvements to the dual carriageway at Lane Head, one of the busiest sections of the A580.
Mark Tilley, the council's head of highways, said: "The Department for Transport has this week approved Wigan Council's bid for some £0.9m for the East Lancashire Road. This is the borough's only 'detrunked' road – meaning responsibility for it switched from the Ministry of Transport to the council a few years ago.
"This is to be spent on resurfacing it to modern high standards and crash barriers, some of which is in evidence already. The Lowton Lane Head work currently in progress is improving safety at the two top accident spots in the borough. The council is absolutely committed to the safety of road users as a major priority and we will use this allocation for that end."
Mr Clark added: "High quality local road networks are vital to communities; connecting people with work, shops, services, families and friends.
"This additional funding will allow local authorities to carry out improvements to important local highways, bringing benefits to all who use the roads. This funding will be used to carry out improvements such as road resurfacing, bridge maintenance and street lighting."
The first round of funding comes in April with the remainder provided from April 2010.
