Global Gathering: Quizmaster Charles Rawding congratulates The Deanery's winning team Chris Brammier, Intesar Mahmood and Tom Mangham.

A group of Wigan school children have set their sights on world domination.

Because when it comes to finding your way around the globe the kids have all the answers.

Recently teams of young people from secondary schools across the borough converged on The Deanery High School to take part in the World Wise Quiz challenge.

The event was Wigan’s take on a national annual competition organised by the Geographical Association. The Wigan event was organised by Geography teacher and ‘gifted and talented’ co-ordinator Andrea Wood and Wigan Council’s Secondary Literacy and Learning consultant Joyce Holden.

Quizmaster for the event was eminent geography scholar, writer and Edge Hill College lecturer Charles Rawding.

Nowhere was out of bounds during the no-holds barred quiz and teams had to prove their knowledge of everywhere from just down the road to half way round the world - from Atherton to Zanzibar and back!

Joyce Holden says: “It was a very exciting competition and all the children were praised for their knowledge and teamwork. It’s fair to say they know their way around! Their geography teachers have done a great job in tutoring them.”

When the final buzzer went the young globe-trotters from The Deanery were proclaimed the winners. Hesketh Fletcher came a close second, third was the team from Bedford High.

All students received certificates and Lonely Planet books provided by the event’s sponsor Aim Higher.
