Some of the biggest names in rugby league will team up this March for a one-off special event to help support the development of the borough’s brightest young rugby stars.
On Saturday 29th March the likes of Joe Lydon, Barrie McDermott and Terry O'Connor will be the star speakers at the Wigan and Leigh Service Area Dinner to be held at the JJB Stadium.
Funds raised at the dinner will help support the best young rugby players from Wigan and Leigh who have been selected to represent the borough in games against other service areas in the north of England.
This special evening is being organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit who co-ordinate the Wigan and Leigh Service Area. Rugby League ‘service areas’ are present in traditional rugby league playing areas such as St Helens and Leeds and aim to develop the sport through youth development programmes.
Wigan Warriors Chief Executive Joe Lydon said,
“We are keen to support the development of young rugby players across the local area. This is a great way for supporters of rugby league to come along, have some fun and at the same time give young players, who are the lifeblood of any professional club, the chance to develop into stars of the future.”
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Schools Sports Development Manager Jane Bent said:
“The money raised will go towards purchasing kits, securing transport, facility hire and referees fees. We work closely with both Wigan Warriors and Leigh Centurions to help develop young talent across the borough. We still have some tables available and would urge people to join us for what is a really fun evening for everyone involved.”
The Wigan and Leigh Service Area Dinner takes place at the JJB Stadium’s Tetley Suite on Saturday 29th March from 7pm.
