Nuisance Value – Tenant Trouble Leads To Eviction

A Wigan and Leigh Housing tenant who made his neighbours’ lives a misery with a barrage of noise and anti-social behaviour has been evicted.

David Johnson, of 20a Hope Carr Road, Leigh, was given his marching orders this week by Wigan and Leigh Housing (WALH) after a long investigation into his anti-social antics.

Neighbours had complained about a succession of visitors to Mr Johnson’s home who would shout through his letterbox and up at his bedroom window into the early hours of the morning.

The number and frequency of the visitors led neighbours to suspect that Mr Johnson was involved in drug-related activity.

WALH’s Tenancy Relations Team were called in to investigate and worked closely with the police, sharing information about the visitors to Mr Johnson’s home.

A subsequent police search of Mr Johnson’s home unearthed class B and C drugs.

Mr Johnson had also been causing his neighbours distress by playing music at an excessively loud level.

The Tenancy Relations Team took the case to court and Mr Johnson was initially allowed to keep his tenancy. However it was discovered that he had broken the rules of his tenancy again.

The case was brought back before the courts this week and Mr Johnson was evicted.

WALH Chief Executive Ashley Crumbley says the case sends a clear message that anti-social behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated.

“Our tenants have asked us to get on with tackling the few bad tenants who are causing problems in their neighbourhoods,” says Ashley. “We have listened and responded and this latest eviction is a continuation of this tough stance on anti-social behaviour.”

He adds:

“We will continue to use the full range of powers available to us and we now have Introductory Tenancy agreements which make it easier for us to evict new tenants who cause problems.

“We do not like evicting people but we will do what must to make sure we have decent council estates where everyone can live in peace.”
