Hag Fold Celebrates Regeneration Success

Wednesday 28th February 2007 (ref: 53/2007)

Residents of Hag Fold will be marking the achievements of one of the borough’s most successful regeneration programmes as it draws to a close next month.

The SRB 5: Atherton Building Communities Programme was awarded a massive £5.95 million cash injection into the Hag Fold area in 1999. This initial award has attracted a further £20 million from other public funds and private sector investments that has benefited the Atherton area.

To celebrate the end of the programme and the real difference it has made to the community, an End of Scheme Celebration will be held at Dorset Road Community Centre. The event will take place on Thursday 8 March between 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm.

The celebrations will include a performance by the SRB5 funded Livewire Theatre Group and presentations and displays from a wide range of projects funded by the Programme all demonstrating the real difference that has been made to the local community.

Susan Wilson, Chair of the SRB 5 Board said:

“The Atherton Building Communities Programme has made a huge difference to the Hag Fold area. The community is stronger and the estate is now safer and cleaner. We should feel very proud of our achievements.

“We want to invite everyone who has contributed to the success of the Programme to come along and celebrate their many achievements in Partnership with the residents of Hag Fold.”

Cllr John O’Neill, Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration said:

“The SRB 5: Atherton Building Communities Programme has been a great success. We are very pleased with everything that has been achieved and the difference it has made to the residents of Hag Fold.”

He added:

“It is a testament to all the Council Officers, project workers and members of the community that the programme has made such an impact and been so instrumental in the regeneration of one of the Country’s most deprived areas.

“Although the SRB 5 programme has come to an end, this is just the beginning. The community’s drive and ambition, together with their “can do” attitude will drive the continued regeneration of the area forward and lead to a much brighter future for the Hag Fold residents.”
