Rugby fans travelling to the much anticipated clash between Leigh Centurions and the Salford City Reds are being urged to sort out their travel plans in advance.
With the prospect of thousands of rugby league fanatics converging on the Leigh Sports Village, organisers and travel experts are urging everyone coming to the game to weigh up their travel options.
Leigh Sports Village Operations Director James Ditchfield says: “We are working flat out with our partners to ensure that attending games at Leigh Sports Village is a fun, pleasant experience. We know that travel arrangements are part of the big day so we are urging people to plan ahead.”
The match kicks off at 3pm on Sunday December 28 and supporters will be competing for car parking spaces across Leigh Town Centre with shoppers.
James says: “Car sharing, coaches and public transport are all options that people should think about rather than simply driving on their own. If we work together we can reduce any problems there may be.”
Not all the car pars at Leigh Sports Village will be open due to building constraints but Pay & Display places will be available in Leigh town centre, just 10 minutes walk away.
James says: “It will be a testing day for everyone involved with the Sports Village as we welcome our first high profile event, so we want people to know about their options and any difficulties they may face. Overall though, we want people to enjoy their day and hope they get the result they are after.”
The number 26 bus service runs hourly between Salford and Leigh and there are regular trains to Atherton Station from where people can catch a bus into Leigh Town Centre. There are also signs around Leigh giving people the walking times to get around the town.
“If you plan your trip correctly by checking our website or checking with Traveline for public transport times you should be ok on the day,” says James. “As with all major events we expect there to be some issues but we will be using it as a learning experience.”
The game is an all-ticket affair and there will be no cash turnstiles on the day. Home fan tickets can be bought from Leigh Centurions, while away fans can get theirs from Salford City Reds.
