  • Looking Forward to Wigan’s Past: New Museum Planned (23/12/2008)

    A NEW museum dedicated to the history of Wigan will be unveiled at the town’s History Shop once its £1.3m makeover is complete. The current exhibition area at the Library Street building will be completely revamped to allow for a display devoted to the borough’s past.

  • Safe in houses (23/12/2008)

    The council’s housing team is asking residents to check their homes to make sure they are safe from the hidden dangers of gas. Every year in the UK, about 20 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues which have not been properly installed or maintained. Many others also suffer ill health. When gas does not burn properly, as with other fuels such as coal, wood or oil, excess carbon monoxide is produced, which is poisonous.

    The season of goodwill to all is upon us and Mayor of Wigan Cllr Rona Winkworth is urging residents of the borough to spare a thought for others during the festive celebrations. In wishing everyone in Wigan Borough a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Cllr Winkworth asks people to keep a caring eye open for vulnerable people in their community.

    Wigan kids know their road safety! The winners of the Wigan central area children’s road safety competition have been announced. And council road safety experts are delighted with the standard of entries and the way the children have shown off what they know about being safe on the streets.

  • Pemberton Switch On Success (18/12/2008)

    Pemberton’s Christmas switch on event was held on Thursday 6 December and was a huge success. This event was organised through the Pemberton Business Partnership Group who received funding from Wigan Council, Pemberton Ward Councillors and Norley Hall Local Voice, which helped to put the decorations up in the town centre and fund the event.

  • Coalfield Regeneration Programme Huge Success! (18/12/2008)

    The Audit Commission has hailed the North West Coalfields Communities Regeneration Programme (NWCCRP) a huge success. The independent watchdog issued its report: ‘A Mine of Opportunities – Local Authorities and the Regeneration of the English Coalfields’ which analyses the outputs of England’s coalfield regeneration programmes within the last ten years.

    It was back to school last week for Cllr Susan Loudon as she went to see rehearsals for Byrchall High’s upcoming performance of “Grease” – and to speak to budding journalists there.
