Half a dozen of the borough’s primary schools feature in education watchdog Ofsted’s latest ‘outstanding inspections’ report.
Hindley J & I, Westleigh Methodists, St Mary and St John, Wigan, Bickershaw C of E, Holy Family R C, New Springs, and Twelve Apostles, Leigh, are all singled out for praise by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector Christine Gilbert.
They were among 14% of the country’s schools judged ‘outstanding’ in 2006/07 for their dynamic leadership, excellent teaching and pupil performance.
Wigan Council’s cabinet champion for children and young people, Cllr Brian Wilson says:
“This is a well-earned Christmas present for all the headteachers, staff, governors, pupils and parents connected with these outstanding schools. They are a credit to the borough.
"It is really pleasing to see an increasing number of our schools receiving such valued recognition from Ofsted. Ofsted does not give these accolades lightly and it reflects the dedication of those involved in our schools to deliver a first rate education to pupils."
A total of around one thousand children are taught at the six schools.
