It can be a tense time for any parent…
Your pride and joy has just passed his or her driving test and is ready to hit the road.
They are young, think they are invincible and may be tempted to take a few risks at the wheel.
The pressure to put their foot down, have a drink or two or even get involved in drug driving can be big.
And all the while you’re sat at home, watching the clock and wondering where they are.
Maybe it’s time for a few extra driving lessons?
But not for them…for you!
Wigan Council’s road safety experts are all set to launch an innovative new scheme that could help – a free course for parents of new drivers.
Council’s Road Safety Manager Julie Dagnall explains:
“There are many pressures on young people when they get into a car. Most young people develop and mature into good road users, but some are tempted to take risks. They can come under pressure to have just one more drink, or even drive under the influence of illegal substances.
“They’re not going to admit any of this to their parents but if we can help parents spot potential issues, it could save lives. Our course for parents is designed to help them support their children and be on the alert for any problems.”
Previous courses for other road users, such as older drivers, have been extremely popular and well-received. The road safety team now wants to reach out to an age group where the accident stats are high and inexperience plays a big part.
A full programme in schools and colleges for potential drivers is being reinforced with these sessions for parents.
Young driver Sarah Roscoe, 19, from Pemberton, passed her test 18 months ago and feels able to deal with the road conditions. Mum Lynn is keen to support her daughter.
“Of course I worry,” Lynn says. “That’s what parents do! If I know about some of the pressures she’s under I can be there for her in an informed way.”
And Sarah agrees: “I don’t want any fuss, but it’s good to know I have support,” she says. “I also know there are others who aren’t as careful. There is a lot of peer pressure out there. Maybe if parents were well informed, they could help like my mum does.”
The first free course will run from 6.30pm until 8.30pm on Thursday September 11 at Wigan Investment Centre, on Riverside Drive. Places are expected to go quickly, so people are advised to book early. Anyone interested can call the Road Safety Team on 01942 488250 for more details.
