Celebrating the Borough’s Cultural Class

Monday 27th April 2009 (ref: WLCT 39/2009)

A NEW awards ceremony will celebrate all that’s class about culture in Wigan and Leigh.

Amateur actors, dancers, musicians, artists, photographers, writers and crafters are being invited to take part in the inaugural “Cultural Partnership Recognition Awards”.

The voluntary sector awards are being organised by Wigan’s Cultural Partnership – a body made up of individuals from the public, private and voluntary sector dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and communities by increasing the accessibility of cultural resources and developing recreational facilities.

This year the awards will concentrate on the arts but each year a different cultural sector - ranging from heritage to environment, lifelong learning to play - will have the chance to shine.

Nomination categories include Long Service Award (lifelong contribution to the arts), Going the Extra Mile (junior member award), Innovative Event (original approach to the arts), Innovative Arts Project (individual), Innovative Arts Project (group).

Former Hollyoaks star, Leah Hackett, will present the awards on Saturday July 4th at Hindley St Peter’s Community Sports Club.

Mark Ashley, Chairman of the Cultural Partnership, said:

“These new awards have been created to recognise the hard work, creativity and commitment of the borough's champions of culture.

“They are the just reward for those people who go out of their way to improve the lives of their fellow citizens week in, week out throughout the year in so many different areas.

“They will be awards to cherish and to celebrate.”

Organiser John Hill, Business and Service Development Support Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, added:

“The partnership is committed to improving the lives of individuals and communities across the borough and its main aim is to increase the accessibility of cultural resources and to develop recreational opportunities for local people.

“We see this new award scheme as pivotal in recognising the talent and effort of individuals and groups who bring the culture of Wigan and Leigh to life.”
