Residents in Leigh have an unquenchable thirst for health, fitness and sport if the initial interest in the soon to be opened Leigh Indoor Sports Centre is anything to go by.

Due to open its doors to the public in August, the brand new sports centre recently invited local clubs and organisations to express an interest in making use of the fantastic new facilities, and the management team have been bowled over by the response.

The £6.4m Leigh Indoor Sports Centre is one of the first major milestones in the £83m Leigh Sports Village project. The sports centre is funded by Greenbank Partnership, Wigan Council and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust. The centre will be managed by the Trust as part of their portfolio of Active Life sports centres.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Centre Manager, Mike Woodruff, said, “It has always been our intention to put in place a balanced programme, catering for all sports, all ages and all abilities, so we are delighted that we have had interest from badminton, netball and basketball clubs to name a few. We are delighted that the new sports centre has captured the imagination of local residents.”

Leigh Indoor Sports Centre includes:

  • Swimming pool – a 25m, six-lane pool with spectator seating for 180 people;
  • Sports hall – consisting of eight courts, can be used for badminton, basketball, netball and volleyball with seating for up to 280 people;
  • Profiles fitness gym – 65 work stations with weight resistance and cardiovascular equipment;
  • Multi-purpose room – will provide a range of aerobic sessions and martial arts activities for up to 40 people;
  • Aerobics suite – ideal for aerobic work-outs and suitable for all ages and abilities;
  • Changing room village – a series of individual changing areas complemented by six additional changing rooms.

The sports centre team plan to finalise the programme in May so they can confirm bookings with all the clubs who have shown an interest. However it is not too late for other clubs, teams and organisations to express their interest.

Mike continued, “Although we are confident of having a full programme in place, there is still space available so this is the last chance for clubs to become part of an exciting new era for sport in Leigh and the surrounding areas. We have also attracted the interest of martial arts clubs, dance organisations and health and fitness experts to stage their sessions at the site. As well as this, the resident swimming club, ‘Atherton and Leigh Amateur Swimming Club’ will be on site from day one."
