Initial work on the plan commenced in July 2010 and this was marked by a presentation to children from St Mary's and St John's School in Standishgate who put forward their ideas on what they wanted the town centre to look like in 2026.
The plan will review the town centre boundaries and the extent of the Principal Shopping Area and, amongst other things, will identify the actions needed to make Wigan central a competitive location for economic development in growth sectors of the economy, including office employment and research and development. See map showing Wigan Central Area Action Plan Boundary (.pdf, 1333Kb).
The plan will be informed by a robust and credible evidence base and sustainability appraisal along with being the subject of extensive community and stakeholder engagement.
In March 2011 we published an Issues Paper (.pdf, 1410Kb) for consultation. The Issues Paper sets out what we believe to be the main issues that the plan needs to address and also identifies the main areas of opportunity within the area. The consultation period ran until 25th May 2011.
The next stage of work on the Plan will involve looking at the various options to address the issues identified and examining the areas of opportunity in more detail.
You can view the Issues Paper and view comments that we received online via our consultation portal (external link).
