Do you want to improve a street, greenspace or local area?

There are over 30 environmental community groups in Wigan borough who may be able to support you with your activities and provide the tools needed to spruce up your neighbourhood or open space.

If you can't find a community group near you, - contact us for advice and equipment.

If the area you are trying to improve contains fly tipped material i.e. sofas, bags of rubbish, you can report it to us.

What can you do?

  • General cleanliness e.g. litter picking, fly posting and graffiti removal, washing street name plates and traffic signage
  • Nature conservation
  • Horticulture
  • Clean ups and painting
  • Health walks
  • Community events
  • Installation of In Bloom planters and plants
  • Planting up floral beds and landscaping areas with summer blooms (annuals)
  • Planting salad, vegetable and herbs
  • Clearing away weeds
  • Removing moss growth from street furniture.

Request permission to improve a space

Before undertaking any environmental volunteering activity on council-owned land, you or your community group will need to request permission - we can advise you and potentially provide equipment.

If the space you would like to improve is privately owned, you will need to gain the land owner’s consent beforehand.

Great British Spring Clean

Wigan Council is supporting residents, businesses, schools and communities to join forces, and pledge to pick one bag of litter for the Great British Spring Clean, from charity Keep Britain Tidy.

If you plan on bringing your community, business, school or even just a group of friends or family together to do a litter pick, complete the below web form to let us know about your litter pick, and we can supply equipment including litter pickers and bags. We can also organise to come pick up your bags when you’re done.
