  • Paper recycling collections
    In Wigan Borough, residents receive a fortnightly collection of paper from their recycling sack. Most properties also have a fortnightly collections of garden waste from their green wheelie bin and a new service is being introduced for class, cans and plastics in a brown bin.

    A Premises licence is required by any premises which provides one or more of the “licensable activities”. Premises is defined as meaning, “any place and includes a vehicle, a vessel or moveable structure”. Such a licence will allow the licence holder to use the premises to which the licence relates ("the licensed premises") for licensable activities.

  • Private Hire Drivers
    A licence is required before any person can drive a private hire vehicle. Licences are issued by Wigan Council, subject to proof of eligibility (driving licence, criminal records check, medical assessment etc..). Applicants are also required to pass a knowledge test.
  • Private Hire Operators
    A private hire operator is a person making provision in the course of his business for the invitation or acceptance of bookings for private hire vehicles. Private hire operators are based at premises throughout the Borough and normally accept bookings over the telephone. Cars are dispatched to customers through the use of radios or computerised systems. There are no restrictions on the number of vehicles and drivers that can be operated under a private hire operators licence.
  • Private Hire Vehicles
    Private hire vehicles have to be licensed by Wigan Council if operating in the Borough. Private hire vehicles are vehicles that cannot be hailed from the street and must be pre-booked through an operator. Vehicles must be tested before a licence can be issued to ensure that they are mechanically fit, safe and comfortable. There is also a further test during the period of the licence.

  • Public Rights of Way
    Wigan is a Metropolitan Borough Council with direct responsibility for its rights of way network. This means the council has a legal duty to 'assert and protect the rights of the public to the use and enjoyment' of Public Rights of Way. In addition to maintaining the area's footpaths and bridleways, officers in the rights of way team also work closely with voluntary and interest groups in the community to enhance and promote the network.
